BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES

Mamaroneck High School Student Café                                
The new student café, set to open this fall, will receive high-tech equipment to turn the
café into a hub of student communications, with an after-hours
coffeehouse/performance space, and meeting venue.

Reinvention of the Hommocks Commons                                
The Hommocks Commons will be remodeled into an inviting environment with
comfortable seating with carpeting for small meetings and theatre in the round, a
museum wall, message board, kiosk/storefront, and a large-screen TV to display videos
of students’ musical performances.

TECHNOLOGY

The first three grants describe a similar new technology that was requested by three
different schools:

Writing on the Wall                                                
This new technology allows a document, whether a student’s work, printed material or a
computer site, held under a document camera, to be projected onto a screen or wall and
instantly shared with the entire classroom. This equipment will be used by the fourth and
fifth grades, as well as the resource room and self-contained classrooms at
Mamaroneck Avenue School.

Third Grade Integrated Technology Project                                
This same technology will be used to enhance the teaching of writing and math in the
third grade at Chatsworth Avenue.

Multimedia Learning Cart                
The document camera, projector, laptop and screen will be placed on a mobile cart, for
use by all the classrooms at Central School.

Technology for the Science Department                                
New equipment for the Hommocks science classrooms includes LCD projectors, ELMO
digital visual presenters, GYRO remote wireless presenters and laptop computers.

College Information Center Enhancement                          
The MHS Counseling Department has recently purchased a state-of-the-art computer-
based college search program called Naviance. This grant for five new computers and a
printer for the new-and-improved College Information Center will help enhance the
college search process for students and guidance counselors.

Creating SMART English Classrooms                                
SMART boards connect “blackboards” to the classroom computer to allow work viewed
on the boards to be saved, manipulated and shared through the classroom computer.
Previously used in science classes, these SMART boards will be used in high school
English classes to teach areas as diverse as essay writing and grammar.

Reaching Each Student to Teach Each Student                        
Team 4 at the Hommocks Middle School has also been awarded a grant to purchase a
SMART Board, digital projector, and laptop computer.

Digital Literacy and Collaboration                                        
This Hommocks grant will be used to incorporate the use of technology in the English
and Social Studies classrooms to enhance the learning of public speaking skills.

Building Inclusion with Danas                                        
Five Dana handheld computers for use by the resource room at Murray Avenue School
for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be used for note taking and writing by students whose
physical and perceptual difficulties limit their ability to write extensively by hand.  

LITERACY

All Elementary: Patricia Polacco, Author in Residence                
Patricia Polacco, distinguished author of many books for young readers, will visit all four
elementary schools to talk about her experiences of growing up with a learning disability
as well as issues of teasing and bullying, along with an evening presentation for parents.

Bilingual Family Mornings at the Library                         
An ESL teacher will facilitate monthly meetings at the Mamaroneck Library to bring
parents and children ages 4 ½ to 7 together to read and talk about a selected bilingual
book. The library will receive 180 bilingual books and the participating families will
receive a book at the first and last sessions. This program is the recipient of the Barbara
Bennett Rones Memorial Endowment grant.

Empowering Students Through Poetry                                
This grant will provide a wireless PA system, Califone Listening Center, dictation
software and CD-roms to enhance the fifth grade poetry curriculum at Chatsworth, which
includes a Poetry Slam, Poet’s Café, and a Poetry Center.  

Electronic Spellers                                                        
Young writers in grades 3 -5 at Murray Ave. will continue to be taught how to use
dictionaries competently, but with electronic spellers in the classroom, will have an
added tool to alleviate some of the frustrations children experience during the writing
process.

SCIENCE

Upgrading the Advanced Biology Laboratory                        
This grant will purchase a variety of equipment such as an incubator, a centrifuge,
spectrophotometers, and biology kits for the Advanced Placement Biology course.

Science Olympiad                                                         
This grant will provide equipment, materials and resources for the Hommocks Science
Olympiad club.

ENRICHMENT

Building Bridges – Breaking Barriers                                 
This follow-up to “Understanding Handicaps” is designed to develop awareness,
sensitivity and respect for all individuals, including the disabled, across all the schools. It
includes specialized resources at the school libraries, programs to increase community
awareness, a collection of instructional resources for the Teacher Institute, and training
for 20 Mamaroneck High School students to act as volunteer coaches for the High
School Special Olympics Team.

Anti-Bullying                                                                
This grant will broaden a program that Hommocks school began earlier this year, with
funding to start the Hommocks Players, an 8th grade performance group that will be
established to carry the anti-bullying message to students in the school.

Conflict Resolution                                                         
This grant will fund the Creative Response To Conflict (CRC) to traina group of Murray
Avenue administrators, teachers and parents as facilitators to promote communication,
community and constructive conflict resolution.

Kinder Café Carts                                                        
Carts stocked with cooking equipment at Central School will support cooking in the
kindergarten curriculum, which helps teach science, math and literacy in an engaging
way.

Traveling Treasure Chests                                                
Six themed trunks will be filled with authentic cultural and historic artifacts for each grade
to enhance the social studies curriculum with learning that is literally hands-on at
Chatsworth.

Talking Trunks                                                         
Mamaroneck Avenue kindergartens will fill trunks with theme-based materials, from
community to construction, designed to elicit and broaden language development.  

PERFORMING ARTS

Shakespeare’s Women                                                 
In this new after-school program, girls in 8th- 10th grades from diverse backgrounds will
study scenes and monologues that involve female characters, and put on a
performance, to increase self-awareness and self-esteem.

Raising Voices                                                        
A Mamaroneck Avenue Performing Artists program with an after-school curriculum and
mentoring in voice and percussion.

PACE Wheelchairs                                                        
Two manual wheelchairs, specifically modified for dancing, will be provided for the PACE
program at the high school.

ATHLETICS

Peak Athletic Performance Prep                                        
Every Mamaroneck High School student athlete will be able to participate in F.A.S.S.T., a
training program that helps athletes develop the agility, speed and strength they need to
withstand a grueling sports season and help prevent injuries.

Traverse Climbing Wall for Mamaroneck Avenue School.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Special Education College Resource Center                         
A new section within the College Information Center will assist the more than 200 of our
high school students with special needs with targeted information about colleges and
vocational programs.

The CLASS Project                                                        
Kurzweil software and equipment for Hommocks, the High School, and a fifth grade pilot
program offers sophisticated reading, research and studying aids for children who need
special assistance in these areas.

Pathways to College – Easing the Transition for Special Learners
This program is designed to assist a group of college-bound special learners in
navigating the college admissions process and preparing for college.

STRIVE                                                                
This grant continues the development of the special education house plan at
Mamaroneck High School with quarterly trips to cultural events.

VIDEO/PHOTOGRAPHY

APPLE Integrated Film Program                                      
Mac computers with video editing software and camcorders will be used to integrate a
pilot video program into the APPLE curriculum.

TV/Video Digital Arts                                                
Two video/film editing stations for the Digital Arts program at Mamaroneck High School.

Training and Staff Development
This special grant, funded by an anonymous donor, will support continuing professional
development for district teachers and administrators.
