Growing Seeds, Minds and Connections”: A Permanent Greenhouse on Hommocks
unlimited number of donations-no minimum Dovetailing with a national movement toward sustainability and increasing children’s awareness of the environment, and the importance of healthy eating, plans are underway to create a greenhouse and vegetable garden on a section of the Hommocks roof. This interactive living- learning environment will increase awareness of the role of local, organic and seasonal foods in the fight against the epidemic of obesity and diabetes stemming from processed food, chemicals and poor eating habits. The greenhouse will serve as a year-round learning center for children throughout the district: * In the Middle School and High School Home and Career Skills classes, the greenhouse will provide students with hands-on experience from planning and planting to growing and harvesting to eating. Not only will they learn where food comes from and its nutritional benefits, they will also acquire the skills needed to grow fresh organic produce sustainably. The greenhouse will enhance the science curriculum when teaching solar energy, nitrogen cycle, composting and photosynthesis. * For the elementary schools, field trips to the greenhouse in upper grades will enhance the study of plant structure, plant cells and photosynthesis. Other opportunities being explored for the greenhouse include: a summer garden program as part of Co-Op Camp; an after-school Garden Club to help with maintenance and research new plant offerings; Continuing Ed classes about greenhouse gardening and canning home-grown produce; and depending on our crops, a food donation program with the Mamaroneck Food Pantry.
